Stricter Immigration Enforcement Could Cost California $278 Billion in GDP
California's economy, the fourth-largest globally, faces a potential $278 billion GDP loss if stricter immigration policies drive out undocumented workers. A Bay Area Economic Institute and UC Merced study highlights agriculture, construction, and hospitality as the most vulnerable sectors.
Immigrants fill critical labor gaps in an aging population, with 63% of farmworkers being foreign-born and 24% undocumented. "These workers keep our economy afloat," says Abby Raisz, research director at the Bay Area Economic Institute. The state's $49 billion agriculture industry relies disproportionately on immigrant labor.
